The city's oldest nickname, “Cowtown,” dates back to the late 1800s when Fort Worth was a key stop along the Chisholm Trail. Cattle drives passed through, making it a hub for livestock trade. The Fort Worth Stockyards, once a bustling center for cattle sales, now stand as a historic district and tourist attraction, maintaining the city's cowboy reputation. In the 1870s, a Dallas newspaper described Fort Worth as so quiet that a panther supposedly slept on Main Street. “Funky Town” arose during the 1980s and 1990s as Fort Worth's music and nightlife sectors began to thrive, particularly in the Cultural District and on the south side. Another simple nickname, “The Fort,” is often used by locals. Respectfully acknowledging its origins as a military outpost in 1849, The Fort pays tribute to its frontier roots. The original Camp Worth was established to protect settlers along the Trinity River.

Referring to its area code, “The 817” is a modern shorthand embraced by Fort Worth natives. This term is commonly found on apparel, tattoos, and in music lyrics as a symbol of local pride.

“F-Dub” is a more recent addition, reflecting a modern twist on the city's name. The nickname gained traction on social media with the Fort Worth Police Department's recruitment video and within local music scenes.
