Tarrant County may have funds for permanent polling places on college campuses

Vote(1000)

Tarrant County could have early voting on college campuses this election season, even though restrictions signed into law by Gov. Greg Abbot (R) last June on temporary polling places had initially made that seem unlikely.

The restrictions, passed as part of House Bill 1888, require polling sites to stay open at least eight hours, according to reporting by the Texas Observer and Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

However, Tarrant County election officials believe there could still be enough money to have polling sites on local campuses that are in-line with the new law.

Lawsuits have been filed by Democrats at both the state and national level, alleging the intent of the law was to disenfranchise younger voters and those living in communities where mobile polling sites have been used for early voting.

Supporters of the law saw the use of schools as polling places as a way that voters could be unduly influenced to support school bond measures.
