In March, Tarrant County Precinct 2 Commissioner Alisa Simmons, the local chapter of the National Kidney Foundation, and the Mid-Cities (Texas) Chapter of The Links, Inc. will host Commissioner Alisa Simmons’ Kidney Wellness & Health Expo, which will offer free kidney screenings, educational sessions and a health and community resources fair.

“There are 37 million kidney disease patients in this country. Most people are unaware they have it,” said Simmons, who was diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease just over a year ago. “African Americans and Latinos are much more likely than White Americans to have kidney failure. We have to address these disparities,” Simmons said. “That’s why we’re offering these free kidney screenings. They’re important for early detection of kidney disease.”

Commissioner Alisa Simmons’ Kidney Wellness & Health Expo will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on March 9, 2024, at the Tarrant County Sub-Courthouse, 700 E. Abram St., in Arlington. The event will offer free kidney screenings, health information sessions, kidney-healthy food samples, group exercise activities, adult vaccines, a KidZ Zone, complimentary lunch, and much more. Registration is encouraged.

To receive a complimentary lunch, attendees should register on EventBrite at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/kidney-wellness-health-expo-tickets-814538876707?aff=ebdssbdestsearch.

Kidney disease is detected by measuring creatinine, a waste product, in samples of a patient’s blood. Doctors use blood test results, age, gender, and other factors to calculate how much waste a patient’s kidneys should filter in a single minute.

“Chronic kidney disease is really easy to detect,” Simmons said. “I’m hosting my Kidney Wellness & Health Expo to spread this message and so that North Texans can receive free kidney screenings.”
