Recent weather conditions have created ideal conditions for greener lawns, with warmer temperatures and much-needed rain. However, it is essential to be mindful of proper yard maintenance practices to avoid environmental issues and potential fines.

The City of Fort Worth highlights the importance of keeping grass clippings off the streets and away from stormwater drains. As stated by the city, "Blowing or leaving grass clippings and other debris in the street during yard maintenance not only looks bad, it is bad for the environment and could lead to fines to you or your lawn-care company."

The accumulation of grass clippings, leaves, and other debris in the stormwater drain system can cause blockages and backups, leading to flooding in various areas. This issue is emphasized by the city, which mentions, "Grass clippings, leaves and other debris, like litter, can clog the City’s stormwater drain system, also known as Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems (MS4)."

To prevent such problems, proper maintenance practices are crucial. The city advises, "Proper maintenance can go a long way." It is essential for individuals and lawn-care companies to refrain from blowing grass clippings or leaves onto the street or into storm drain inlets.

Violating the ordinances regarding stormwater management can result in fines, as outlined in the City of Fort Worth Ordinance § 12.5-302: "a person commits an offense if they introduce or cause to be introduced any discharge into the MS4 that is not composed entirely of stormwater."

If residents observe any violations or issues related to stormwater management, they are encouraged to report them through the MyFW App or by contacting the City Call Center at 817-392-1234. In line with this, the city urges, "See a violation? Report it and other issues direct from your mobile device using the MyFW App or call the City Call Center at 817-392-1234."

By following proper yard maintenance practices and ensuring that grass clippings are kept off the streets and away from stormwater drains, residents can contribute to protecting the environment and avoiding potential fines.
