City Council update revealed that since the reinstatement of the City’s Neighborhood Traffic Calming Program two years ago, the initiative has garnered popularity. The program was initially halted in 2014 due to concerns about speed bumps affecting emergency response times. However, continuous complaints regarding speeding in neighborhoods prompted a revival of the program in March 2022, focusing on low-volume, residential streets only.
According to the City Council update, speed cushions and speed tables were approved for use in the program, leading to 124 applications for speed cushions being received since its relaunch. The report also mentioned that in the past year, speed cushions have either been installed or are planned for installation at 20 locations.
The process for requesting a traffic calming device for neighborhoods involves submitting an application, after which the installation typically takes three to four months from the date of Transportation & Public Works' receipt of a completed consent form. Furthermore, before and after evaluations are conducted to ensure that the installations effectively reduce speed and meet the expectations of residents.
The reintroduction of speed cushions and speed tables in 2022 marked a significant step in addressing speeding concerns in residential areas, with a focus on enhancing road safety and improving the overall quality of life for residents.
