Congresswoman Beth Van Duyne has introduced two pieces of legislation aimed at addressing immigration issues and election security. The Voter Eligibility Verification Act and the No Congressional Funds for Sanctuary Cities Act were proposed in response to what she describes as the negative impact of Democratic policies on national safety and electoral integrity.
"The open border policies we’ve seen for the last 3.5 years from Democrat leadership have made our nation less safe and our elections less secure," stated Rep. Van Duyne. She criticized sanctuary city mayors for not adhering to immigration laws and accused Washington, D.C. officials of withholding citizenship data from states.
The Voter Eligibility Verification Act mandates that U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) must respond to state requests for citizenship data within 30 days. This legislation comes after Texas encountered difficulties when USCIS did not provide necessary data to verify voter eligibility, according to Rep. Van Duyne.
"After Texas requested necessary data from USCIS to verify voter citizenship and clean the voter rolls, USCIS failed to respond, leaving Texas struggling to ensure only eligible voters could vote," said Rep. Van Duyne.
The second bill, the No Congressional Funds for Sanctuary Cities Act, seeks to cut off federal community project funds from cities with sanctuary policies that impede immigration enforcement or protect individuals from Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
“President Trump's deportation plan relies on cooperation from local law enforcement and sanctuary city policies compromise those efforts,” noted Rep. Van Duyne. “My proposal to withhold community project funds from sanctuary cities would pressure local governments to allow greater cooperation with federal immigration enforcement.”
Rep. Van Duyne's legislative efforts are supported by Congressman Dan Crenshaw (TX-02), who co-introduced the Voter Eligibility Verification Act.
In related developments, Rep. Van Duyne has initiated measures to support local authorities in deporting criminal aliens by collaborating with ICE. The recent failure of USCIS to provide citizenship information requested by Texas Secretary of State Jane Nelson has intensified calls for legislative action.
