Dr. Jared Wood has been appointed as the manager of the Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge. With over 15 years in natural resource management, conservation, and education, Wood is set to lead one of the largest city-owned nature centers in the country.

Since joining Fort Worth in August 2023 as a natural resources supervisor and later serving as interim manager, Wood has contributed significantly to conservation efforts at the Nature Center. Under his leadership, the team achieved record-breaking prescribed burns, expanded habitat restoration projects, and initiated collaborative research programs such as an American alligator population study. His outreach strategies have also boosted community engagement and support for the center's mission.

Before his role with Fort Worth, Wood was an associate professor of zoology at Southwestern Adventist University and directed its Dinosaur Museum & Research Center. He led transformative projects there, including developing one of the largest paleontological field stations in the U.S. His experience in public-private partnerships and strategic planning aligns well with the Nature Center’s goals.

“I am deeply honored to step into this role and continue building on the incredible work of past and present staff, volunteers and community partners,” Wood stated. “The Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge is a true ecological gem, and I am committed to ensuring its protection, sustainable enhancement and accessibility for future generations.”

Wood looks forward to working under new leadership from Fort Worth Park & Recreation Director Dave Lewis and supporting Mayor Mattie Parker’s Good Natured Open Space Initiative to enhance community connections to natural resources.

“I’m very excited to support Dave’s vision and help advance the mayor’s initiative, ensuring the Nature Center remains a national model for conservation and education,” he added.

“Jared has already demonstrated exceptional leadership and vision during his time with the Nature Center,” said Lewis. “We are confident that under his guidance, the refuge will continue to thrive as a premier destination for nature enthusiasts and conservationists alike.”

The Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge spans more than 3,600 acres offering sanctuary for native wildlife along with outdoor recreation and educational opportunities.
