Rep. Salman Bhojani introduced HB 2253, a bill on Elections, to the Texas House on Friday, March 14 during the 89(R) legislative session, according to the Texas Legislature website.

More specifically, the official text was summarized by the state legislature as ’’Relating to the authority to cancel certain elections on a measure’’.

The following is our breakdown, based on the actual bill text, and may include interpretation to clarify its provisions.

The bill amends the Election Code to allow the authority that ordered an election on a measure to cancel the election if a disaster declaration by the governor, under Chapter 418 of the Government Code, occurs within the jurisdiction 90 days before the election. If canceled, the authority must reschedule the election for the next available uniform election day. The measure requires posting notices of cancellation at each polling place during early voting and on election day. A county election officer can consolidate notices of cancellation for all authorities using the officer’s services under specific conditions. The bill takes effect immediately upon receiving the necessary two-thirds vote from all elected members of each house or on Sept. 1, 2025, if that vote is not achieved.

Salman Bhojani, member of the House Committee on S/C on Workforce and vice chair of the House Committee on Delivery of Government Efficiency, proposed another 11 bills during the 89(R) legislative session.

Bhojani graduated from the University of Texas at Dallas in 2003 with a BS and again in 2013 from Dedman School of Law at Southern Methodist University with a JD.

Salman Bhojani is currently serving in the Texas State House, representing the state's 92nd House district. He replaced previous state representative Jeff Cason in 2023.

Bills in Texas go through a multi-step legislative process, including committee review, debates, and votes in both chambers before reaching a final decision. Each session, there are typically thousands of bills introduced, but only a portion successfully navigate the process to become law.
