Devan Allen, Tarrant County Commissioner, asked state legislators to create new boundaries when they rezone districts next year.
Allen said past efforts led to districts that “stripped away basic rights” from many Texans.
“I ask that your actions be guided not by the need to maintain political influence,” she said to the House Redistricting Committee, which held one of its series of redistricting meetings at the Tarrant County College Southeast Campus. “We have an amazing opportunity to learn from the past and allow it to positively influence our future,” Allen said.
The meeting series is designed to allow statewide input into the redistricting process. Many voters and legislators are calling for a stop to gerrymandering, which is the process by which lawmakers draw maps and rezone districts to benefit their own political party.
