National Pothole Day is quickly approaching on January 15th, and Fort Worth is gearing up for the occasion. It's important to understand why these potholes matter, how Fort Worth's Pothole Crew handles repairs, and why your contribution to spotting and reporting them is crucial for smoother roads ahead.

Potholes may seem like a minor inconvenience, but they can actually wreak havoc on vehicles. These road imperfections are caused by a variety of factors such as road wear, vehicle weight, and even weather conditions. While National Pothole Day is observed annually in January, Fort Worth's Pothole Crew is out on the streets every day, tirelessly repairing potholes.

With over 8,000 lane miles of roadway in the city, the residents' help is a vital part of the process. Instead of swerving to avoid them and driving on, it is crucial to report these potholes. The Pothole Crew is dedicated to fixing them, usually within 48 hours. To report a pothole, simply use the MyFW app and provide the necessary information. If possible, snap a photo of the pothole and include it with your report via the app.

It's important to note that potholes should not be larger than 3 feet in diameter. Anything larger should be reported as a "street repair" or "base failure." Fort Worth is committed to maintaining its roads and ensuring the safety of its residents.

Interestingly, the term "pothole" has a historical origin. The name stems from the roads created during the Roman Empire. In the 1400s and 1500s, pottery producers in England took advantage of the deep ruts carved into roadways by wagon and coach wheels. They would dig further into these ruts to uncover clay deposits for crafting clay pots. Teamsters who drove wagons and coaches across these roads were aware of who or what produced these holes, hence the term "potholes."

Fort Worth's Pothole Crew is dedicated to fixing these road imperfections promptly. Once a pothole is reported, they strive to repair it within 48 hours, ensuring smoother roads for everyone.

So, on National Pothole Day, let's join Fort Worth's effort to make our roads safer and smoother. Download the MyFW app and report any potholes you come across. Together, we can contribute to the maintenance and improvement of our city's infrastructure.
