City Council learned about a long-term plan to enhance green spaces in Fort Worth during a meeting on Tuesday. The plan, known as the Good Natured Greenspace Initiative, was announced by Mayor Mattie Parker last October. The initiative aims to address the loss of natural open space to development and unite public and private community partners to invest in greenspace.
During the meeting, Deputy City Manager Mark McDaniel presented a vision to boost park development by increasing public-private participation. Fort Worth is projected to experience significant population growth in the next 24 years, and the need for more greenspace is crucial. McDaniel highlighted the city's shortcomings in park investment compared to other major cities and the percentage of residents who have access to parks within a 10-minute walk.
To acquire more greenspace, the plan involves two strategies. The first is to strengthen environmental conservation efforts and inter-agency collaboration. This will ensure that the development of green spaces is sustainable and aligns with conservation objectives. The second strategy involves attracting financial support from corporate entities and foundations. This support will provide the necessary funding for the acquisition and development of new parks.
The Good Natured Greenspace Initiative aims to address the current challenges and ensure that future generations can enjoy the benefits of green spaces. The plan will not only enhance the natural environment but also provide recreational opportunities for Fort Worth families. The initiative has already garnered support from various stakeholders, including corporate entities and foundations, who recognize the importance of preserving and expanding greenspaces in the city.
Next steps for the initiative involve the development of an aspirational study for the Fort Worth park system. Council members will be asked to consider this study on January 23, with completion expected in the summer of 2024. This study will provide a roadmap for future park development and guide the city's efforts in creating a sustainable and accessible green space network.
The long-term plan to enhance green spaces in Fort Worth is a significant step towards creating a healthier and more livable city. By investing in parks and greenspaces, the city is not only improving the quality of life for its residents but also ensuring that future generations can enjoy the benefits of nature and outdoor recreation. With the support of the community and key stakeholders, Fort Worth is on its way to becoming a greener and more sustainable city.
