The City of Fort Worth is evaluating options to fund street maintenance needs. A funding solution is needed because, due primarily to rapid growth and inflation, the cost to maintain the City’s pavement condition significantly exceeds the current funding.
On Tuesday, March 5, the Fort Worth City Council began exploring options, including the option to implement a Street Maintenance Fee (SMF), to address the insufficient street maintenance funding for the City’s 8,100 lane-mile street network.
"A funding solution will provide better street conditions and prevent the overall decline of the City’s pavement. Maintenance is the key to prolonging a street’s life. Adequate funding allows TPW to proactively address maintenance needs, ultimately providing improved street conditions for a lower cost."
The SMF is described as a charge that property occupants pay based on their fair share of the cost to maintain the street systems.
The evaluation of the SMF and funding plans will continue, with a focus on refining rates, exemptions, and establishing an effective date for implementation of the fee. A robust public outreach campaign, starting with a stakeholder group, will ensure community engagement and transparency throughout the process.
By ensuring sustainable funding for roadway preventative maintenance, the City aims to enjoy safer, smoother, and more efficient transportation.
