Fort Worth's Pioneers Rest Cemetery, the city's first public cemetery housing the graves of early founders and leaders, is set for a transformation thanks to a $30,000 grant from the Texas Historical Commission.
The grant will specifically fund improvements on two prominent structures within the National Register Historic District cemetery, which is currently facing various stages of disrepair.
The Pioneers Rest Cemetery Association, which spearheaded the grant application process, received the award after initially applying in February 2023. The Texas Historical Commission approved a total of 16 proposals for grant funding, with Pioneers Rest being one of the recipients.
In a collaborative effort, the City's Historic Preservation staff played a crucial role in assisting the Pioneers Rest Cemetery Association throughout the application process and will continue to support the association during the execution of the grant work, providing valuable advice on preservation practices.
The transformation of Pioneers Rest Cemetery is a significant step towards preserving the historical significance of Fort Worth's oldest cemetery and honoring the legacy of its early pioneers and leaders.
