WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Roger Williams (TX-25) has sent a letter in response to the Biden-Harris Administration’s announcement of new actions to implement rent control policies.
“Rent control measures by the Biden-Harris Administration is yet another socialist policy that will only decrease housing availability and quality, making the problem worse,” said Congressman Williams. “To protect the rental housing market and overall economy, we must address this crisis through reducing regulatory burden, increasing incentives for new construction, and allowing the free market to work.”
Bob Pinnegar, President and CEO of the National Apartment Association (NAA), echoed these sentiments: "Decades of academic consensus and real-life observations consistently show that rent control is a failed policy that exacerbates affordability challenges, devastates housing supply and harms local communities. Across every corner of our country, we suffer from a critical lack of housing options at all price points; in fact, we must build 4.3 million new apartments by 2035 to address affordability, demand and an existing housing deficit. Now is the time for policymakers to reject misguided rent control proposals and unite around solutions that increase housing supply, the only solution that increases housing accessibility and availability for Americans long-term."
Supporting organizations include the Mortgage Bankers Association, National Apartment Association, and Fort Worth Apartment Association.
Congressman Roger Williams is the Chairman of the House Small Business Committee and a member of the House Financial Services Committee. He represents the 25th Congressional District of Texas.
