On October 1, the Environmental Services Department marked its first anniversary as an independent entity within the city. The celebration took place in the Fort Worth Council Chamber, adorned with nature-themed decorations. A photo slideshow highlighted various teams and key achievements of the department over the past year. Attendees enjoyed refreshments, desserts, and charcuterie-style selections.

The event featured educational tables from each division of the department: Environmental Quality, Consumer Health, Solid Waste Services, and Keep Fort Worth Beautiful. These tables offered information on programs and services through pamphlets and flyers. Displays included mosquito sampling stations, food scrap composting kits, and residential carts for waste collection.

Environmental Services Director Cody Whittenburg spoke alongside his executive team and Assistant City Manager Valerie Washington about the department's successes during its inaugural year.

Mayor Mattie Parker was present along with personnel from the City Manager’s Office, city council members, and representatives from other departments to show support for Environmental Services. Jennifer Pilkington, HR administrative assistant, expressed her excitement: “It’s amazing to see so many [people] show up to support and celebrate our department’s one-year anniversary!”

Chris Harper, contract services administrator, noted: “This was the first time I have seen a department set up an event like this. It really showcased all the hard work and accomplishments of our first year. It’s very encouraging to see support from [city managers] and city councilmembers. Environmental Services is clearly headed in the right direction.”

The celebration concluded with attendees singing "Happy Birthday" as a commemorative cake was presented. The department looks forward to Fiscal Year 2025 with enthusiasm.
