Batteries play a crucial role in powering various household items, but they pose risks when improperly discarded. Improper disposal of used batteries can lead to environmental and health hazards. Harmful chemicals from batteries can leak into soil and waterways, damaging ecosystems. Additionally, they may cause fires in collection trucks, recycling centers, garbage processing plants, and even collection carts.

To mitigate these risks, it is important to follow proper disposal methods. Once residents drop off their used batteries at designated stations or the Environmental Collection Center (ECC), the batteries are sorted by size and stored safely in drums before being transported to a recycling facility.

For more details on garbage and recycling procedures, individuals can visit www.fortworthtexas.gov/solidwaste or contact the Fort Worth Contact Center at 817-392-1234.
