Congressman Roger Williams, representing Texas's 25th district, has introduced a bill to make the 'Remain in Mexico' policy permanent. This initiative, titled the Make the Migrant Protection Protocols Mandatory Act, is a House companion to a similar bill by Senator Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee.
Williams criticized President Biden's decision to reverse this policy upon taking office. "Biden’s first action upon taking office four years ago was to reverse President Trump’s ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy. The consequences have proven deadly," he stated. He emphasized the need for law and order, arguing that his bill would require those awaiting court dates to remain in their country of origin.
Congressman Carlos Gimenez from Florida co-leads the bill with Williams. Gimenez expressed concerns about current immigration policies under the Biden administration. "The Biden-Harris Administration has made a mockery of our immigration system. Biden broke it and President Trump will fix it," he said.
Senator Blackburn also voiced her support for making the policy permanent, citing issues with illegal immigration during President Biden's tenure. She remarked on the increase in illegal border crossings and its impact on American communities.
The bill has several original cosponsors including Representatives Carlos Gimenez, Abraham Hamadeh, Jake Ellzey, among others. It is backed by organizations such as Numbers USA and Eagle Forum.
Congressman Williams chairs the House Small Business Committee and serves on the House Financial Services Committee.
