At a recent City Council work session, the Fort Worth Police Department (FWPD) presented a report highlighting a growing issue: the theft of telecommunications wires owned by AT&T. This crime has seen a significant increase in Fort Worth and other cities nationwide.

To combat this trend, the FWPD's Metal Theft Unit (MTU) has implemented several measures. Officers from the unit participated in the inaugural Summit on Protecting Critical Communications Infrastructure. This event was organized by leading industry associations to find actionable solutions for mitigating threats to communication infrastructure. The summit included participation from major communications companies such as AT&T, Verizon, Comcast, Lumen, and federal agencies including the Federal Communications Commission, FBI, Homeland Security, alongside numerous law enforcement partners.
