Congresswoman Beth Van Duyne has reintroduced the Voter Eligibility Verification Act aimed at providing states with resources to verify voter eligibility and secure elections. The bill mandates that U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) verify and provide immigration status information of potential voters upon request by a state Attorney General or Secretary of State within 15 days.
Rep. Van Duyne stated, "Democrats made our elections less secure when they opened our borders to a flood of illegal immigrants. To ensure the millions of illegal aliens allowed into the country didn’t influence our elections, Texas requested citizenship data from USCIS that is necessary for determining voter eligibility.” She further noted that USCIS's failure to respond created gaps in voter verification in Texas, leaving them without essential information.
The bill was introduced with support from several U.S. Representatives including Andy Biggs, Ben Cline, Chuck Edwards, Troy Nehls, Scott Perry, Austin Scott, Keith Self, Claudia Tenney, Tom Tiffany, and Derrick Van Orden.
Greg Sindelar, CEO of the Texas Public Policy Foundation expressed support for the bill saying, “Ensuring our elections are free and fair is essential to our democracy. The way to guarantee election integrity is by requiring each voter be able to prove that they are who they claim to be and that they are eligible to vote in that election."
