The Fort Worth Police Department (FWPD) is taking steps to address the issue of celebratory gunfire by implementing technology designed to detect the location of gunshots. This initiative is particularly focused on times of celebration, such as the Fourth of July and New Year’s Eve.

The discharge of firearms within Fort Worth city limits is illegal and poses a significant safety risk. The FWPD emphasizes that such actions can have serious legal consequences, including potential jail time.

To effectively tackle this problem, the FWPD has conducted research on shooting incidents and related calls across the city. This research helped identify strategic locations for installing gunshot detection technology as part of a pilot program. These designated areas will be equipped with camera technology to aid in monitoring and response efforts.

Residents are urged to celebrate safely and responsibly, as celebratory gunfire could lead to incarceration. Additionally, possessing fireworks in Fort Worth is illegal and can result in fines up to $2,000.

As summer approaches, the FWPD plans to enhance its public communication efforts regarding these issues.
