Denton Guyer offensive lineman Gabe Blair has committed to play football for the University of North Texas (UNT). With a current rating among the top 20 centers in the country, his high school coach is predicting success for Blair at UNT.

Rodney Webb, football coach and athletic director for Denton Guyer High School, told the Mid City Times that he has only coached Blair during a single season, but saw good things from Blair.

“It was a pleasure,” Webb said of the experience of coaching Blair. “Gabe is a great player who led our team to the state finals and semifinals in his last two years at Guyer.”

Webb said that recruiting is a two-way street, and that he encourages student-athletes who are being aggressively recruited to remember that the key is to something that fits them, not simply the biggest or most successful program. And UNT will be a good fit for Blair.

“Without a doubt – Gabe has a chance to be one of the all-time greats to play at UNT,” Webb said.

Once the choice was made, Webb said that he encouraged Blair to approach his future in the same way that he encourages all his players, by never looking back and finding success in the choices that are ahead of them.

“I just told Gabe what I tell all my kids – make it the right decision by being where your feet are,” Webb said. “Don’t look in the rearview mirror.”

At 6 feet, 3 inches and 303 pounds, Blair is rated an 85 by 24/7Sports and .8416 by the industry-generated 24/7Sports composite rating, according to coverage by 24/7sports.com. In addition to UNT, Blair also was recruited by Colorado, Syracuse, Tulane, USC and Virginia Tech.
