Fort Worth, Texas - In celebration of Black History Month, the City of Fort Worth Diversity & Inclusion employee committee is organizing a program titled "Afrofuturism: Imagining the Future While Honoring the Past." The program, scheduled for Thursday, February 15th, aims to pay tribute to the contributions and legacy of African Americans throughout history.
Dr. Angela Mack, a renowned scholar, will be delivering a presentation during the event. She will provide an overview of Afrofuturism, a cultural and artistic movement that combines elements of African diaspora culture with science fiction and technology. Dr. Mack will also highlight the achievements of 13 national and local historic figures from the time of Emancipation to the present day.
The program will not only feature academic insights but also showcase a performance that brings history to life. Attendees will have the opportunity to experience music and monologues that span 300 years and are infused with the ideology of Afrofuturism. This blend of historical narratives and futuristic perspectives will enlighten and inspire the audience.
Speaking about the significance of Afrofuturism, Dr. Mack emphasized, "Afrofuturism allows us to reimagine the past, engage with the present, and shape our future. It is a powerful tool for envisioning a world where African Americans are not only recognized for their contributions but are also central to the narrative of progress."
The City of Fort Worth is committed to promoting diversity and inclusion, and this program is just one of the many initiatives they support. By providing a platform to celebrate Black History Month, the city aims to foster a greater understanding and appreciation for the achievements of African Americans in various fields, including activism, civil rights, industry, politics, science, and culture.
The Afrofuturism program will be accessible to a wide audience, with live streaming available on FWTV and the City's YouTube channel. For those unable to watch it in real-time, the program will also be available on-demand from Friday, February 16th, on both platforms.
As Black History Month continues, it is essential to recognize and honor the contributions of African Americans who have shaped our society. The Afrofuturism program in Fort Worth provides a visionary journey through time, offering a unique perspective on the past, present, and future. It is an opportunity for individuals to gain a deeper understanding of the African American experience and to celebrate their achievements.
In the words of Rosa Parks, a civil rights pioneer, "I would like to be remembered as a person who wanted to be free... so other people would be also free." Through events like the Afrofuturism program, we can ensure that the legacy of African Americans lives on and continues to inspire future generations.
