In a visionary move to prioritize safety on our streets, the Fort Worth City Council adopted the Vision Zero strategy in November 2019. This strategy aims to eradicate all traffic fatalities and serious injuries through a multifaceted approach involving roadway design, education, and the implementation of policies and regulations that prioritize safety for all modes of transportation.

"The Vision Zero strategy, internationally recognized for its effectiveness, operates on the principle that all traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries can be prevented through a transportation system designed to accommodate human error," says an official statement from the City Council.

The City Council's support for Vision Zero has led to substantial investments in traffic safety programming. In fact, the council secured a Safe Streets and Roadways for All (SS4A) grant from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to further bolster their efforts.

"A major milestone was achieved on Oct. 17, 2023, when City Council ratified the application for and accepted a $524,381.60 SS4A funding award from FHWA," reveals the official statement.

Since the Council's support in November 2019, Fort Worth has implemented various programs to lay the groundwork for a safer transportation landscape. The School Zone Maintenance program and the Sidewalk program have been instrumental in improving safety for pedestrians and cyclists.

Looking ahead, the Vision Zero Action Plan will be developed concurrently with the "Moving a Million" Comprehensive Master Transportation Plan. These initiatives will shape Fort Worth's foundational policies around transportation infrastructure investment and traffic safety.

"Over the next 18 months, starting in February 2024 and concluding in fall or winter 2025, the Vision Zero Action Plan and 'Moving a Million' will be developed, expanding eligibility for federal funding opportunities," states the official statement.

Fort Worth envisions a future where every resident can navigate streets safely, and the City Council aims to make Fort Worth a model for traffic safety and a beacon for other communities striving to eliminate traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries.

By prioritizing safety and implementing innovative strategies, Fort Worth is paving the way towards a safer transportation landscape.
