Movies That Matter, a national award-winning film series program of the City of Fort Worth’s Human Relations Commission, will present "The Real Cost" at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 10, at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, located at 3200 Darnell St.

Admission to the event is free, and reservations can be made online through Eventbrite.

"The Real Cost" (2022, NR, 74 min.) examines the $1.8 trillion student loan debt crisis in America. The average American household owes $39,000 in student loans, with minorities disproportionately affected and contributing to an expanding racial gap. Although many have paid off their debts, penalties, uncontrolled interest rates, and predatory behaviors by loan companies continue to exacerbate the problem. The film questions whether current government efforts are sufficient to address these issues.

Movies That Matter is a bi-monthly film series that highlights significant human and civil rights issues. Each event includes a film screening followed by a moderated discussion with special guests. Screenings occur in February, April, June, August, October and December.
