As fall and winter yard preparation begins, the City’s Stormwater Program is reminding residents to keep grass clippings and fallen leaves away from storm drains.

“Don’t blow it: Avoid using a leaf blower to push clippings and leaves into storm drains or nearby creeks and channels. This debris blocks drainage systems and eventually pollutes creeks, rivers, and lakes, as stormwater flows directly downstream.”

The city emphasizes the importance of keeping debris out of drains. When drainage systems get clogged, it can lead to flooding and standing water in streets and yards.

Residents are encouraged to leave mulched yard trimmings and leaves on their lawns as natural compost, which returns valuable nutrients to the soil. Alternatively, they can rake up the clippings, bag them, and set them out for pickup on collection day.

“Key takeaway: Only rain down the storm drain!”

If you encounter a clogged storm drain, call 817-392-3279 or report it through the MyFW app.
