The Lights Out initiative is an educational campaign aimed at raising awareness about the protection of migratory birds by reducing light pollution. Each year, hundreds of millions of birds migrate through Texas and face challenges due to artificial lighting.
Texans are encouraged to turn off nonessential lights from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. during the fall migration period from August 15 to November 30, with special emphasis on the peak migration period between October 14 and November 17.
The initiative's goal is to safeguard billions of birds migrating across the United States. This migration is one of the largest globally and occurs mainly at night. Urban lights can attract and disorient these birds, leading them into danger. By simply turning off lights, people can help reduce these risks and support safe bird migrations.
Fort Worth is committed to this cause as it aligns with both bird protection and energy conservation goals. Residents and businesses are urged to participate by minimizing light pollution during nighttime hours.
This effort is led by the National Audubon Society in collaboration with Texan by Nature. Additional information can be found on the National Audubon Society website. Bird enthusiasts can track migratory patterns using the BirdCast website.
