On October 15, Fort Worth's city council approved a tax abatement to aid the local expansion of Americold, a major provider of temperature-controlled warehousing and distribution. Americold operates 239 locations globally and employs 15,000 people. The company already has four sites in Fort Worth, with additional locations in Dallas, Grand Prairie, and Mansfield.
The new project is anticipated to generate over $2.5 million in gross new net taxes for the city annually. This amount would effectively repay the incentive in under three and a half years.
Cold storage warehousing involves storing perishable or sensitive goods such as food and medicine in climate-controlled settings. Recent national trends like the rise of e-commerce and supply chain onshoring have increased demand for cold storage facilities.
Fort Worth currently lacks sufficient cold storage capacity, which is vital for robust supply chains. Existing facilities are nearly at full occupancy with no new units under construction as of late 2023.
Americold’s planned expansion will provide additional cold storage capacity for companies on the western side of the DFW Metroplex. It will also bolster Fort Worth’s logistics and healthcare industries by ensuring that medical professionals have access to necessary cold storage for medication, equipment, and other temperature-sensitive supplies.
