The City Council has agreed to purchase 58.8 acres of open space adjacent to Rock Creek Ranch Park for $1.59 million. This acquisition will expand the park, making it one of the largest community parks in the city's system, only surpassed by Gateway Park and the Fort Worth Nature Center.
Park & Recreation Director Richard Zavala commented on the significance of this acquisition, stating, "The strategic acquisition of this natural and historical property will have long-reaching effects for current and future generations."
In recent years, Fort Worth has focused on expanding its parklands. In 2021, over 275 acres were acquired for $6.75 million, followed by an additional 22 acres a year later.
This new acquisition aligns with several city initiatives. It supports the Open Space Conservation Program's goals related to ecosystem preservation and flood control while contributing to Mayor Mattie Parker’s Good Natured Greenspace Initiative that aims to preserve 10,000 acres across Fort Worth within five years.
Historically significant, the newly acquired land was originally a cattle ranch established in 1848. Its diverse topography offers opportunities for archeological and historical exploration. The parkland is partially bisected by the Fort Worth and Western Railroad.
Future development plans for the park will be determined through a master plan process involving public participation.
