North Texas fire departments, including the Fort Worth Fire Department (FWFD), are collaborating to gather disaster relief supplies for residents of Yancey County, North Carolina. The area has been severely affected by flooding following Hurricane Helene's unprecedented rainfall.
The hurricane caused significant damage to over 1,000 structures in the region, leaving many people without essential services such as power and heat. In response, fire departments across North Texas have initiated efforts to collect and distribute necessary supplies to those most impacted. Donations are being accepted at all FWFD stations until Saturday, October 26.
Bradley Duncan, president of the Yancey County Firefighters Association, highlighted the challenges during a virtual meeting with local fire chiefs. He noted that "the volunteer firefighters in Yancey County have been instrumental in identifying critical community needs and delivering aid wherever possible." However, he also pointed out that recovery efforts are hindered by washed-out roads and areas accessible only by ATVs or boats.
The relief operations aim to provide cold-weather supplies to residents, improve access to isolated locations, and support long-term recovery through road repairs and power restoration.
