The Fort Worth Park & Recreation Department has received a $1.5 million grant from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) for the Sycamore Park Improvements project. This grant, part of TPWD's Local Park Grant Program, will contribute to the ongoing efforts to revitalize and enhance parkland in Fort Worth.

The grant funds, combined with $4 million in local funding, will be used to transform the decommissioned golf course at Sycamore Park into a nature-based space for recreational use. The proposed enhancements include repurposing a former golf course water hazard into a wetland to improve water quality in Sycamore Creek, creating paved walking trails, constructing an iconic overlook pavilion, developing soft surface mountain bike trails, and removing invasive vegetation.

Community engagement has been a crucial aspect of this project. The Fort Worth Park & Recreation Department actively sought public input during the master plan process, hosting well-attended public meetings and conducting a follow-up survey to gather additional valuable feedback. The grant funds will be used to address the community's top priorities, as identified in these meetings.

Engineering plans are already underway, and construction is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2025, with completion projected for the spring of 2026. Councilmember Nettles expressed excitement about the news, stating, "Fort Worth’s partnership with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department shows our shared commitment to bringing people together. With this grant, we are well on our way to turning an old golf course into a nature haven for the community."

This transformation of Sycamore Park is a significant step forward in the efforts to create more recreational spaces and improve the natural environment in Fort Worth. The collaboration between the Fort Worth Park & Recreation Department and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department demonstrates a shared commitment to preserving and enhancing the city's green spaces.

The grant funding will not only support the physical transformation of the park but also contribute to the overall well-being and quality of life for the residents of Fort Worth. The nature-based amenities and recreational opportunities provided by the revitalized Sycamore Park will offer a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, encouraging outdoor activity, and fostering a deeper connection with nature.

The Sycamore Park Improvements project is a testament to the power of community engagement and collaboration in creating spaces that meet the needs and desires of the residents. With the support of the grant from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Fort Worth is making significant progress in its goal of providing accessible and sustainable recreational spaces for its residents.

As the project moves forward, the Fort Worth Park & Recreation Department will continue to work closely with the community, ensuring that their vision for Sycamore Park is realized. With the anticipated completion in spring 2026, residents can look forward to enjoying a transformed park that not only preserves the natural beauty of the area but also provides ample opportunities for outdoor recreation and relaxation.
