Cody M. Whittenburg has been appointed as the director of the City's Environmental Services Department, following his interim role since September 2023. City Manager David Cooke expressed his confidence in Whittenburg, stating, "During his years in Fort Worth, we have found Cody to be extremely service-focused and energetic, with the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to strengthen community wellbeing and to create high-impact outcomes for our residents."
In his interim position, Whittenburg successfully reorganized environmental quality, health, and solid waste services into a single department while providing leadership for environmental policies and programs. Prior to this role, he served as the assistant director of the City's Code Compliance Department, focusing on environmental health services. Whittenburg's experience also includes six years as an environmental manager for Fort Worth and positions in stormwater and environmental administration in municipal governments in Stillwater and Norman, Oklahoma.
Whittenburg's academic background includes a doctor of philosophy degree in civil engineering from Oklahoma State University and a master of science degree in environmental science from the University of Oklahoma.
The Environmental Services Department, established in 2023, plays a crucial role in protecting public health, properties, and environmental resources through effective management strategies, public education, and community engagement. They aim to create a clean, safe, and green city by implementing measures such as litter prevention, waste management improvement, and environmental stewardship practices.
