Dr. Cody M. Whittenburg has been named director of the City’s Environmental Services Department. He had been in an interim role since September 2023.
“During his years in Fort Worth, we have found Cody to be extremely service-focused and energetic, with the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to strengthen community wellbeing and to create high-impact outcomes for our residents,” Assistant City Manager Valerie Washington said in making the announcement.
As the interim director of the department, Whittenburg helped lead the newly formed department that consolidated the environmental quality, health and solid waste services into a single department while providing leadership for environmental policies and programs.
Previously, Whittenburg was assistant director of the City’s Code Compliance Department, focusing mainly on environmental health services. He has also served as environmental manager for Fort Worth for six years. He previously held positions in stormwater and environmental administration with municipal governments in Stillwater and Norman, Oklahoma.
Whittenburg holds a doctor of philosophy degree in civil engineering from Oklahoma State University and a master of science degree in environmental science from the University of Oklahoma.
The Environmental Services Department, established in 2023, works to protect public health, properties, environmental and natural resources through effective management strategies, public education and engagement with the community in order to create a clean, safe and green city. It safeguards against pollution through litter prevention and reduction efforts and through improved waste management. Teams are committed to environmental stewardship practices and behaviors through compliance, pollution prevention, sustainability, recycling, and reuse. They provide residents with services, technical guidance, and volunteer opportunities to support achieving City goals.
