Juneteenth is a holiday celebrating the ultimate triumph of American freedom. It honors the contributions of former enslaved African Americans who survived the inhumane institution of chattel slavery while building the nation as an emerging global superpower. America celebrates African American achievement, while encouraging continuous self-development and respect for all cultures.
In acknowledgment of the national holiday, the City’s Diversity & Inclusion Employee Committee is hosting a program, "Celebrating Juneteenth: Past, Present and Future," on Thursday, June 13. The program will be broadcast live on FWTV and the City’s YouTube channel. The program will be available to view on demand on both platforms 24 hours after the conclusion of the live broadcast.
The presentation will explore the origin of Juneteenth celebrations, how they have evolved over the years, and how they might continue to evolve. The program also will include a theatrical performance, "Let Freedom Ring: A Generational Perspective," created by Sheran Goodspeed Keyton, which includes an artistic interpretation of generational perspectives regarding the meaning of freedom and how that has changed for each generation.
