"The Wisdom of Trauma," released in 2021 with a runtime of one hour and twenty-seven minutes, delves into the mental health crisis in America. Statistics reveal that one in five Americans receives a mental illness diagnosis annually. Suicide ranks as the second leading cause of death among U.S. youth aged 15-24, claiming over 48,300 lives domestically and approximately 800,000 globally each year. Additionally, drug overdoses result in around 81,000 deaths annually in the U.S., while autoimmune disorders affect about 24 million Americans. Dr. Gabor Maté discusses these interconnected issues of anxiety, chronic illness, and substance abuse as being "normal — but not in the way you might think."
Movies That Matter is known for its bi-monthly film series focusing on significant human and civil rights topics. Each session includes a film screening followed by a moderated discussion featuring special guests. Screenings occur every February, April, June, August, October, and December.
