The City of Fort Worth Park & Recreation Department has been awarded two grants from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. These grants are set to enhance Oak Grove Community Park and the Fort Worth Zoo, reflecting Fort Worth's dedication to improving public spaces and promoting conservation education.

The first grant is designated for Oak Grove Community Park, a 67.39-acre park in southeast Fort Worth. The city has allocated $3 million from 2022 Bond funds and $560,000 from park dedication fees for master planning, design, and phase one development. An additional $1.5 million from TPWD will allow for the completion of an 8-foot-wide trail loop connecting the northern and southern sections of the park, offering better access and recreational opportunities for local residents. The grant may also fund a tennis court, pickleball courts, shaded playgrounds, seating areas, and native landscaping enhancements.

The second grant will be used to renovate the Hall of Wonders in the Texas Wild! section of the Fort Worth Zoo. This educational hub has been inspiring visitors since 2001 with its conservation messages about Texas' biodiversity. With a $2 million grant from TPWD, the Hall of Wonders will feature modern interactive displays addressing contemporary conservation issues such as water management, invasive species control, wildlife habitat management, energy concerns, among others. These updates aim to connect visitors with stewardship practices and appreciation for Texas' natural heritage.

“These projects highlight the strong partnership between the City of Fort Worth, Fort Worth Zoological Association and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department,” said Richard Zavala, director of Fort Worth Park & Recreation. “We are grateful for their continued support as we work together to create spaces that inspire, educate and connect our community.”
