Jesus "Jay" Chapa has been appointed as Fort Worth's new city manager, officially taking on the role during a City Council ceremony. Chapa is recognized for his extensive experience in local government and his longstanding service to Fort Worth, where he has been involved in numerous community and neighborhood initiatives.

Chapa's appointment marks a historic moment as he becomes the first Hispanic individual to hold the position of city manager in Fort Worth. His career spans over 25 years, with significant roles including deputy city manager and director of housing and economic development. During his tenure, Chapa has contributed to strengthening the city's economy, enhancing public safety, and ensuring financial stability. He played key roles in projects like the completion of Dickies Arena, the development of Renaissance Square, and the transformation of Near Southside into an entertainment hub.

Chapa is married to Evalis, and they have a daughter named Emilia who is currently attending medical school. He holds a master's degree in public administration from the University of North Texas and a bachelor's degree in history from Texas Tech University.

The outgoing city manager, David Cooke, will retire in February 2025 after more than ten years of service, making him the longest-serving city manager for Fort Worth. In his remaining time, Cooke will focus on ongoing projects such as closing out the Fiscal Year 2024 budget and briefing Chapa on important issues like transitioning to a Fire-based EMS service.

A farewell event for Cooke is scheduled for February 20 at City Hall from 4-6 p.m., where community members can acknowledge his contributions over the past decade.
