The Fort Worth City Council has approved a resolution to lease city-owned land in the Historic Southside for the National Juneteenth Museum's construction. The museum aims to commemorate Fort Worth's role in Juneteenth history and its connection to Opal Lee, known as the "Grandmother of Juneteenth."

City officials have engaged with the community through several public meetings, where most residents expressed support for leasing the land on the condition that key programs at the Southside Community Center (SCC) remain accessible. This initiative is seen by Fort Worth leaders as an opportunity to honor Juneteenth’s legacy while addressing community needs responsibly.

The National Juneteenth Museum is projected to open in 2026.
