WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Roger Williams (R-TX), Chairman of the House Committee on Small Business, has announced that his bill, H.R. 7129, the Put America on Commission Act of 2024, has passed out of Committee and is now headed to the House floor for further consideration.
The bill aims to address the issue of stolen pandemic loan funds, which the Small Business Administration (SBA) estimates to be around $200 billion in fraudulent activity. Chairman Williams emphasizes the need for innovative solutions to recover this money for the American people, stating, "We must think of innovative ways to help get this money back for the American people, and as a business owner, I know that incentives matter."
Under the proposed legislation, individuals who provide credible information on stolen funds will be rewarded monetarily. Chairman Williams draws on his private sector experience, stating, "Commission works, and I am happy to bring my private sector experience to the forefront within the Committee on Small Business."
The bill establishes an Office of Whistleblower Awards within the SBA, which will be responsible for maximizing recovery efforts of fraudulent pandemic loan funds. If a tip provided by an individual leads to a conviction, they will receive a monetary award. This new office will be housed within the SBA's existing Office of Performance, Planning, and Chief Financial Officer.
All Republican Members of the House Committee on Small Business have signed on as original co-sponsors of this legislation, demonstrating their commitment to combating fraud in pandemic lending programs. Chairman Williams is joined by Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (MO-03), Vice Chairman, as well as several other Representatives from across the country.
In conclusion, Chairman Williams' bill, H.R. 7129, aims to tackle the issue of stolen pandemic loan funds by establishing an Office of Whistleblower Awards within the SBA. This legislation is a response to the estimated $200 billion in fraudulent activity that occurred during the pandemic lending programs. If successful, the bill will provide incentives for individuals to come forward with credible information, helping to recover the funds and protect the interests of the American people.
