Published on April 30, 2024The Fort Worth City Council’s Ad Hoc Committee on Emergency Medical Response has finalized its recommendations for the future of EMS service in Fort Worth and surrounding communities, aiming to improve response times and ensure financial stability.

Committee Chair and Council Member Carlos Flores expressed satisfaction with the proposed reforms, stating, “I believe we have arrived at a place that balances the needs of our growing community, respects the best of what MedStar does now and is financially sustainable for Fort Worth and our partners over the long-term.”

Acknowledging the collaborative effort involved, Flores thanked various stakeholders for their contributions, including MedStar, partner cities, and community medical providers.

Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker recognized the significant undertaking, commending all involved for their dedication, stating, “This has truly been a huge effort... While we have arrived at a decision, much work lies ahead to ensure the transition for MedStar employees, and their families, will be a smooth one.”

The Committee's recommendations aim to improve response times by up to five and a half minutes, provide better resources, ensure a sustainable workload for paramedics and EMTs, and establish long-term financial health for the EMS system.

The decision to revamp the EMS system followed a consultant evaluation by Fitch & Associates, highlighting the need for enhanced resources to alleviate high workloads within the current system. The study was triggered by financial challenges faced by Tarrant County EMS provider, MedStar.

The City Council is set to receive a briefing on the recommendations at the upcoming work session on Tuesday, May 7, as the city progresses towards implementing the proposed changes for a more efficient and financially viable EMS system.
